Hotel Spotlight: Mountain Resort Feuerberg, Carinthia

An alpine wellness escape with panoramic soul

Some hotels instantly set the tone. At Mountain Resort Feuerberg, it happens somewhere along the twisty drive up the Gerlitzen Alpe. One minute you're deep in the forest, the next you're above the clouds, and then, just before you start questioning your inner ear, you spot it: a cluster of chalets and a striking mountaintop hotel, perched at nearly 1,800 meters, with the mountains and lakes of Carinthia spread out below like a stage.

From that first wide-sky view, I was all in.

Feuerberg is part wellness resort, part alpine playground, and part private village. It’s a 4-star superior property that’s quietly beloved by Austrians and Germans, but still largely under the radar for international travelers. That won’t last long.

The Vibe

Welcoming, serene, and a touch surprising. You get the warmth of Austrian hospitality, the ease of half board dining, and the kind of expansive spa experience you'd expect from a luxury wellness retreat, but without any stiffness. Families feel at home. So do couples, spa lovers, and active types who want their mountain air with a side of e-bike or yoga.

The architecture blends alpine charm with contemporary lines, less antler-chic, more clean pine and thoughtful light. It’s rooted in the landscape, but there’s a lightness to the design, a breath of alpine air and a nod to nostalgia here and there.

Rooms & Chalets

There are two ways to stay here: in the main hotel or in one of the freestanding chalets.

The hotel rooms are a standout in their own right, elegant, contemporary, and thoughtfully designed with comfort in mind. Many offer sweeping mountain views, and several come equipped with in-room saunas, whirlpools, or fireplaces. The rooms feel fresh and airy, with that clean Alpine minimalism done right. While A/C is available in many rooms, and they’re adding more each season, it’s rarely needed thanks to the crisp mountain air. There’s something lovely about sleeping with the windows open and waking up to cool alpine breezes.

I stayed in a chalet, cozy, traditional, and ideal for families or travelers who like a bit more space and privacy. These mini mountain homes are sprinkled across the hillside, giving you the feeling of being in your own alpine hideaway. Think sloped wooden roofs, little balconies, and living areas perfect for game nights or quiet mornings. There's even a charming walk between chalets if you want to stretch your legs between spa sessions or meals. A perfect warm-up to that second dessert.

Infinity Pool Dreams & Spa

It all starts with the spa. It spans 4,500 square meters and includes 12 pools, over a dozen saunas, countless quiet zones, and relaxation rooms that make you forget what day it is.

The infinity pool is the showstopper, once named the “Coolest Pool in Europe,” it’s the kind of place that makes you want to swim slowly and just… stare. Out across the lakes. Into the clouds. At the blue-green horizon where Austria blurs into Slovenia.

I love a sauna with a view, and Feuerberg does not disappoint. There's a sauna for every mood, salt, lava, spruce, even a “concert sauna” where soft music floats through the heat.

Everything is well-signed (including clothing preferences), and families have their own designated spa areas with slides and fun zones.

You could spend days here and still discover new corners.

Dining

Feuerberg includes half board for all guests, and this is no ordinary buffet. It’s generous, elegant, and designed to make you linger.

Breakfast includes freshly pressed juices (DIY stations with every fruit and veggie imaginable), platters of local cheeses, and that glorious Austrian bread I’d somehow forgotten existed. Dinners are equally expansive: soups, roasts, regional specialties, and enough sweet endings to ruin your restraint.

There’s also a separate chalet restaurant up the hill if you want a different vibe or a hike-worthy destination. (We walked there one night at sunset, it was magic.)

Activities & Ski

Feuerberg is designed for year-round adventure and restoration. In summer, it’s all about hiking trails, alpine meadows, forest walks, and lake views. You can join a guided herbal walk, set out to a mountaintop hut for dinner, or simply wander from spa to sun lounger without a plan. There’s sunrise yoga (if you’re up early), forest meditation, and e-biking too.

In winter, the resort transforms into a true ski-in/ski-out haven. The Gerlitzen slopes are right at your doorstep, with 52 kilometers of runs and a network of modern lifts. Whether you're an experienced skier or just starting out, the on-site ski school and rental shop make everything easy. And after a morning on the mountain? Straight to the spa, no shuttle required.

You’ll also find a full sport and leisure hall, family spa, and kids’ club during holiday periods.

Even if you do nothing, you’ll feel like you’ve done enough.

Location

Carinthia is one of Austria’s best-kept secrets, sunny, lakeside, and nestled where Austria meets Italy and Slovenia. Feuerberg itself is perched above Lake Ossiach and is easily paired with other highlights in the region or even a cross-border adventure.

I’m dreaming of returning with my family for a summer-to-fall trip: maybe starting in Vienna, then a few days of biking around the lakes or walking from hut to hut through the mountains.

And then ending at Feuerberg, for wellness, warm beds, and wide views.

From there, it’s an easy journey onward to Venice or Ljubljana.

It’s that kind of place: A perfect punctuation mark on a bigger European journey.

For Who

Feuerberg is perfect for couples, families, and wellness travelers who want something high-altitude but low-key. It’s especially great for people who are spa-curious but don’t want the formal feel of a destination retreat. Active travelers will find plenty to do, and if you're looking for a resort that works across generations, this is it.

It also makes a fantastic 'coolcation', that sweet spot where mountain air, water views, and summer sunshine come together in one restorative packageBooking with Me

Feuerberg may be under the radar outside Austria, but I’ve met the team, explored the resort intensively, and can help you find just the right chalet, room, or wellness rhythm for your stay. Want to ski in, spa out, and soak in that infinity pool before breakfast? Let’s make it happen.
