My favorite packing tricks

There are countless packing lists out there, but here's a peek into mine ;) Not a full list, just a couple of my personal rules that keep my traveling hassle-free. I like convenience—no shopping right after landing and no digging through piles of unused items!

Suitcase Love

I love my trusty medium-sized spinner suitcase, a size above carry-on. While I travel light, I’m not a carry-on only kind of person. I prefer the luxury of strolling through the airport with almost nothing. I've been lucky never to lose luggage, and I aim to minimize transfers. (In case you’re curious, I use the medium Away suitcase.)

Clothing Wisdom

My overpacking days are behind me 🙌. The rule is three tops for every bottom—versatile and compact. Three pairs of shoes max (including the ones I’m wearing): flip flops, walking shoes, and dress shoes. If I’m unsure about an item, I leave it out. (I used to pack those “maybe” items, but now I do the opposite.)

Pro Tip: Lightweight clothes hangers are a game-changer. My clothes transition seamlessly from my home closet to my suitcase, to the hotel closet, and back. Tees and smaller items go in a packing cube.

Toiletry Time: Always Ready to Go

My toiletry bag is kind of large and pre-packed with essentials. I add my current favorites before leaving. Depending on my destination and hotel, I may or may not pack soap, shampoo, and conditioner—I’m not too fussy, and most luxury hotels have great products. As for toothbrushes, I buy them in bulk so I have fresh ones for each trip (at home, I use an electric one).

Knick-Knacks in a Cube

Since my suitcase is medium-sized, I don’t have to cram every corner. Small items like belts, pens, sunglasses, anti-wrinkle spray, a laundry bag (aka pillowcase), and if needed, a plug adaptor and bug spray, all go into one packing cube. It makes unpacking a breeze. For items that might leak? Gallon-sized zipper bags to the rescue! Jewelry-wise, I usually only bring what I’m wearing.

In-Flight Must-Haves

I’ve got an in-flight baggy pre-packed with essentials: tiny hand sanitizer, face spray, a granola bar (I usually skip the airplane food), mints, eye mask, AirPods, refillable water bottle, my e-reader, a (portable) charger, and a lightweight tote. Depending on the trip, I might also bring my laptop. And let's not forget my large, soft scarf—perfect for staying cozy on overnight flights 🧣. And, of course, travel documents and a credit card—honestly, if you have those, you’re good to go!

My son takes minimalism to the next level: recently he got on the plane to The Netherlands with just his passport and phone. That’s it!

Happy packing and even happier travels!
