Carinthia, Austria: Lakes, Mountains & Alpine Wellness

I'm interested

Lakeside luxury, mountain adventures, and Austrian traditions

Carinthia surprised me at every turn and felt deeply familiar all at once. Austria is a childhood memory for me. It's the turquoise lakes, soft rolling Alps, hearty food, and that mix of charm and ease that feels so inviting. It’s the kind of place made for slowing down (even though I somehow managed to do a lot :). This summer I rediscovered it, from boat rides on the Wörthersee to spa time high above the lake.

Lakeside Luxury

The Wörthersee is Carinthia’s crown jewel: shimmering turquoise water, lined with classic Austrian villas and lively towns.

In Velden, we stayed at our partners: Schlosshotel Velden, an Austrian classic right on the lake. Think terraces for sunset drinks, a spa that feels endless, and even a pool that sits directly on the lake itself. Hotels here often have that very Austrian charm, traditional, family-owned, full of history. Many include half board (breakfast and dinner), which makes it easy to settle in and focus on exploring or relaxing. For travelers who want both great amenities and a sense of place, this is a perfect fit.

Exploring by Boat (and Tower)

Don’t miss dinner-hopping by boat across the Wörthersee, gliding from one lakeside restaurant to another with the mountains in the background.

For a different kind of view, head up the Piramidenkogel, a wooden tower with sweeping panoramas of Carinthia, Slovenia, and Italy. And yes, there’s a slide down. I tried it, fun, silly, and absolutely worth it.

Wellness in the Mountains

If lakeside elegance is one side of Carinthia, mountaintop wellness is the other. At Hotel Feuerberg, perched high above Lake Ossiach, I discovered a spa wonderland: 11 pools, saunas galore, herbal walks, and an infinity pool where it’s hard to see where the water ends and the sky begins. In winter, it turns into a ski-in, ski-out resort; in summer, it’s all about hiking trails, e-biking, wellness, endless activities and that fresh Alpine air. This is the spot for travelers who want to combine active days with restorative wellness.

Nature & Adventure

Carinthia’s landscapes invite you outdoors. Hiking is big here, whether it’s easy day hikes or traditional hut-to-hut treks where you sleep in mountain cabins.

We explored biosphere trails in Bad Kleinkirchheim

with a ranger pointing out unique plants and birds. There’s fishing, swimming, and of course schnapps, which seems to appear at every turn as a celebratory toast. Cycling is another highlight: E-biking around the lakes or tackling mountain bike trails that my boys would race down while I lingered and enjoyed the views. Carinthia really works for families, with activities that keep kids and teens moving while adults can soak in the scenery at their own pace.

A Taste of Carinthia

Food in Carinthia is hearty and comforting, with just enough regional quirks to surprise. My favorite dish? Kärntner Kasnudeln, pasta pockets stuffed with cheese and herbs, usually served with a sprinkle of browned butter.

Expect lakefront lunches, rustic cabin meals with accordion music, and plenty of Apfelstrudel along the way.

Why Carinthia

Carinthia is still under the radar compared to Austria’s more famous regions. That’s what makes it so rewarding: five-star wellness resorts balanced by authentic Alpine traditions, lakeside villas beside rustic mountain huts.

It’s a destination I recommend to travelers who love pairing authenticity with nature, wellness with outdoor adventure.

Combining Carinthia

Carinthia pairs beautifully with other destinations. Of course, Vienna is an easy add-on, with direct trains whisking you between city and lakeside in just a few hours.

Italy (Venice) and Slovenia are right on the doorstep, making cross-border itineraries seamless. And within Austria, Carinthia combines well with the alpine lake region of Styria or Salzburg for travelers who want to see multiple sides of the country in one trip.

If not Carinthia…

If Carinthia isn’t on your list, look for destinations with the same formula: lakes to dive into, mountains to hike, spas to recharge, and comforting regional food. Think Switzerland’s Engadin valley, Slovenia’s Lake Bled, Italy’s Dolomites, or even France’s Savoie. Each offers that same restorative balance
