Four Luxury Routes in Germany and Austria

Polished stays, smart pacing, and just enough structure to leave room for wandering.

I grew up traveling through these regions, so this is the kind of Europe that feels both iconic and deeply familiar to me. Over the past year I’ve also been doing a proper deep dive into the hotel landscape here, the classics, the newcomers, and the quietly brilliant properties that most people miss when they plan from afar.

These routes are intentionally high-level starting points. Once you share your dates, travel style, and pace, I’ll tailor the routing, transfers, and hotel choices, and secure preferred partner perks where available.

Route 1: North to South (or reverse)

A classic “city, mountains, wow-mountains, style” arc. Munich sets the tone, Interalpen gives you the deep exhale, the Dolomites deliver the drama, and Milan finishes it off with design, food, and a little fashion energy.

Munich (1 night)
Suggested stays: Rosewood Munich, Mandarin Oriental, Rocco Forte

Tyrolean Alps and Innsbruck (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Interalpen Hotel Tyrol
Why I love it: it’s the kind of hotel that makes the mountains feel easy. Spacious, calm, quietly luxurious, and one of the best “reset” bases I know, especially when you want fresh air and a proper wellness element without losing comfort.

Dolomites (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Forestis

Milan (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Mandarin Oriental, Rocco Forte
Departure: Milan
Why it works: City energy, then mountains, then a stylish finish.

Route 2: North to East (or reverse)

The most balanced Austria route if you want two iconic cities with fresh-air space in between. Think Munich ease, Tyrolean reset, Salzburg charm, then Vienna for culture, coffeehouses, and a proper grand finale.

Munich (1 night)
Suggested stays: Rosewood Munich, Mandarin Oriental, Rocco Forte

Tyrolean Alps and Innsbruck (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Interalpen Hotel Tyrol
Why it works here: it’s the perfect “breathing room” stop between two cities.

Salzburg (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Rosewood Schloss Fuschl (outside the city) or Hotel Sacher (in the center)

Vienna (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Mandarin Oriental, Rosewood Vienna, Hotel Sacher
Departure: Vienna
Why it works: A classic Austria arc with two very different cities.North Island: Culture, Coastlines & Character

Route 3: Post-ski recovery

For people who love skiing, but also love feeling human again afterward. You get your Lech ski days, then shift into full wellness mode at Interalpen so you fly home rested instead of wrecked.

Munich (1 night)
Suggested stays: Rosewood Munich, Mandarin Oriental, Rocco Forte

Lech am Arlberg (3–4 nights)
Suggested stays: Hotel Kristberg (brand-new, only 27 suites)

Wellness reset (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Interalpen Hotel Tyrol
Why I use it as a “red thread”: after ski days, it’s exactly the right kind of decompress. Spa, pools, mountain air, and a level of comfort that makes people exhale the minute they check in.

Departure: Munich
Why it works: Ski days, then a proper recovery.

Route 4: Post-Oktoberfest reset

A smart way to do Munich without burning out. Enjoy Oktoberfest (or just Munich’s energy), then disappear into the mountains for quiet, spa time, and good sleep, with a short Salzburg stop if you want one last cultural hit.

Munich (2 nights)
Suggested stays: Rosewood Munich, Mandarin Oriental, Rocco Forte

Wellness reset (3 nights)
Suggested stays: Interalpen Hotel Tyrol
Why it works: you get Munich’s energy, then you disappear into the mountains and reset properly.

Salzburg (1 night)
Suggested stays: Hotel Sacher
Departure: Munich
Why it works: Best of Munich, then quiet, then a cultural palate cleanser.

A quick note:
These are just four of many possible combinations. I have plenty more ideas depending on whether you want more lake time, more hiking, more design hotels, or a slower pace with fewer hotel changes.

Send me:

  • your dates (or month)

  • who’s traveling

  • your pace (relaxed vs active)

I’ll suggest the best routing and a short, curated hotel shortlist with preferred partner perks where available.
